
Using analytics for your Shopify website is a great way to know who is coming to your website, what pages they visit, how long they come for, and so much more. Shopify does provide us with built-in analytics, but it’s good t have another set of eyes, so to speak, to help us track the performance of our website.
In this article, we will discuss how to setup Google Analytics on Shopify. Let’s get started.
Step 1: Go to your Google Analytics account
If you don’t already have an account, head over to www.analytics.google.com to create your free account. Once you’re in, on the left side of the screen, all the way at the bottom, look for the settings icon. This should say “Admin”. Click on it.
The next step in how to setup Google Analytics on Shopify is to look for the “Account” section, and click on “Create Account”. You will need to provide an account name. To keep it simple, use the name of your Shopify store.
There will next be some checkboxes asking permission for various data sharing. Read through these, and when you are ready, click “Next”.
You will now need to create a “Property”, which is like a child of an account, or website. Each account can have multiple properties, but again, let’s keep it simple for now and just create one. You can title your property as “My Website Name” Data.
Click “Advanced Options”, and select “Create a Universal Analytics Property”. Also, make sure that “Create only a Universal Analytics property” is selected.
Next, Google will ask some details about your business, such as the business size and how you plan to use Google Analytics. After this, you will need to accept the Terms and Agreements.

Step 2: Start collecting website data
The next step in how to setup Google Analytics on Shopify is to get your tracking code, which will allow you to track visitors who come to your Shopify website.
Google now asks the platform you are using. Click on “web”.
If you have your website’s link, or domain, go ahead and paste that into the “Website name” field. For Stream name, you can simply put in here the name of your website.
You should now be taken to a screen with your “Tracking ID’, which looks like UA-242623803-2. This is the code that Shopify will use to track data on your website.

Step 3: Plug your Tracking ID into Shopify
The next thing you’ll want to do when looking for how to setup Google Analytics on Shopify is to take your ID and copy it.
Now, go to your Shopify store’s admin page. From here, click on “Sales Channels”, then “Preferences”. Scroll down a little bit until you see the “Google Analytics” section.
Take your Tracking ID that you copied and paste that into that section. Now, go to your Shopify store. Click around on a few things.
Go to Google Analytics, and on the left side of the page, click on the home icon. Once you’re there, refresh the page. You should see one user on your website. That’s you!
